Initial Ideas

The aim of the project is to portray a conserved building and not a new one. Although as much original material should be preserved as possible, this has often proved difficult with modern construction techniques. Techniques such as overcladding and patch repair modify the appearance of the concrete and prevents the reversibility of the structure. My idea of preservation within the bear ravine will be captured through the use of glass to restructure the ravine. By using glass the viewer is shown one of two things; the ravine in disrepair and original form, helping the viewer to understand the material history of the overall architecture. The purpose of my outcome is to make the work as much a part of the support as the work itself. Using glass to create transparent casts that fit within the surviving structure adding depth and contrast to the remaining geometric architectural interest as well as having as much interest once taken away from the structure.
